Dan's House of Hope is offering housing for cancer patients aged 15 to 39 who want to get treated at MD Anderson in Houston but live far away. See following letter.
Hi folks,
You may recall news we shared in December that Dan's House of Hope had purchased a B&B property in Houston, just minutes from the front doors of all of Houston's Texas Medical Center hospitals, including MDACC. This is a huge next step in the evolution of our mission to support Adolescent & Young Adult cancer patients and their caregivers with supportive programming, housing and a sense of community for this vastly under-served age demographic. Our ribbon cutting and grand opening at the end of March will be preceded on 3/25 by presentation of a proclamation from the mayor at the Houston city council meeting deeming that day to be Dan's House of Hope day in the city of Houston. As you can tell, we're pretty excited.
With this new house, we no longer will need our apartment space at the Esplanade on the north side of Hermann Park. We will be giving that up after the lease expires at the beginning of May. This apartment is currently NOT being used (1 bedroom with a king and a loft with two twins). If you know of an AYA (aged 15 to 39) with any type of cancer who will need lodging for the next couple of months, please contact me. After 4/1/14, we will have 4 to 6 bedrooms at the new facility that will be available for AYAs.
At the apartment, we try to cater to folks with a minimum stay of 10 days or more, and we ask for a nightly donation of $45 (which doesn't even cover our rent of $1406, never mind utilities, etc.). It is fully furnished and stocked with everything needed for cooking etc. At the B&B, we will be asking for donations of $30 to $35 per night which will include a couple of meals. With the rodeo coming to Houston at the beginning of March through 3/23, lodging at hotels will be at a premium.
I'd like to give first crack at the apartment to this Osteo family. If interested, please e-mail me ASAP. If it's still available on Sunday, I'll ask Mimi to share this note with the other groups.
Regards,
Roger
